Elliott Andalman Celebrates Susan Goering’s Retirement with ACLU Maryland Chapter

Elliott Andalman, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, with his wife, Martha Bergmark, attended an ACLU event in Baltimore on Thursday night, February 15, 2018, celebrating the retirement of Susan Goering, ACLU Executive Director of the Maryland chapter for the last 30 years. The Master of Ceremonies for the event was board member Garland Nixon, the host of “News Views” on WPFW. The event featured seven speakers including Judge Robert Wilkins of the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia. The speakers discussed some of the important civil rights cases and campaigns won by the ACLU under Susan’s leadership including voting rights cases, equal funding for public schools, discrimination in public housing, discrimination against black drivers on I-95, Maryland’s DREAM act to protect immigrant children, and marriage equality. The event was attended by over 400 people and pointed out that, despite progress, there remain enormous challenges ahead and that the ACLU needed to remain as vigilant in the next 30 years as it has been for the last 30 years.
