elliott-andalmanAs 2015 approaches, it’s time to evaluate your Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits for any changes in coverage. The New Year brings with it several updates to SSD laws, in addition to a Cost of Living Increase (COLA) which we have previously reported will be 1.7 percent.

For questions about social security disability law in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington, DC, contact us today.

You can expect the following Social Security adjustments in 2015:

  1. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will once again mail out paper statements of their earnings record and estimate of benefits. These will not be mailed to everyone. However, SSA plans to start mailing the statement out every five years starting when a person turns age 25 and is not receiving benefits. After age 60, people will receive them more frequently.
  2. Social Security beneficiaries under the age of 66 will be eligible for greater earning limits. You will be able to earn up to $15,720.00 in 2015, and $1.00 in benefits will be withheld for every $2.00 earned above that limit. Retirees who turn 66 in 2015 and have signed up for Social Security can earn up to $41,880 before every $3.00 earned above the limit, resulting in $1.00 in benefits being withheld. Once a retiree turns 66, there is no limit on earnings, and Social Security payments are recalculated to give the retiree credit for the withheld benefits.
  3. The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax for 2015 will increase from $117,000.00 to $118,500.00.
